Default Heading to my first GA gator hunt

I've been applying for GA gator hunts for the last nine years. GA changed the deadline from the end of July to the 15th this year. I was fortunate to see the early deadline and I applied.

I decided to go with zone 8 because I was stationed at Ft Stewart years ago and I didn't want to drive too far. I've been talking with my guide for a few years and he came highly recommended.

I'm pretty excited since I've been applying for so many years. I had 8 points available and most years 4-5 points are needed. I submitted 5 points, but it looks like GA only took 4 points for my tag.

My friend is going to come with me on the trip to help out with loading the gator on the boat.

I've never gator hunted, so I cannot wait to give this a try. My guide supplies all equipment, but I might bring my Mission crossbow to get the kill shot.

Has anyone gone on a gator hunt? I'd like some tips if you have any suggestions.

I plan on wearing long sleeved shirt and use Permethrin for ticks. I'm also bringing a headlamp and probably my Esee 4 knife. That knife has killed two wild pigs, so I fully trust it with my life. I was told I could bring my pistol, which I'd probably would have brought with me regardless. I'm either bringing my G20 10mm or my built poly 80 9MM.

Yes, I'm hunting at night. I've heard that zone 8 is a sleeper zone and there are some 12'+ gators in the area.

The only recipes I'm really seeing for gators are gator bites that are battered and deep fried...not that I have anything against that method as I've eaten gator that way before.

It's only one night...so Saturday night into Sunday morning...he's been guiding for a long time and does not feel it will require more than one day.

My understanding of gators is it takes a very tight hit to kill them. Basically a brain shot, and their brains are tiny, and surrounded by a huge and thick skull. So if you hit a bad angle it just deflects, and if you miss a walnut sized spot, it does nothing. I suppose a heart shot would work also, but that is less exposed.

It sounds like tremendous fun. I hope you get a 12 footer! Let us know!
