If my math is correct a 6% tax on $5.00 is 30 cents. Yes, If I saw this I would be wondering too (for a second). But its nothing to lose sleep over.

If it was a LGS all I can hope is they pocketed the extra 30 cents as profit and did not give it to the state.

If it was a chain store, like Dicks, I hope you start a BIG class action lawsuit against them.

I would think that if the store POS system tags the $0.30 as tax, then it gets sent to the state.

Its that pesky 'principle' thing that torments many of us

Although I must admit it would bother me but not enough to pursue, way too many other things that require my attention

It honestly probably comes down to the POS that a stores uses, the policy the store has and the intelligence of the
person doing the work. I'd have to dig up old receipts to check.

PICS Charge is $2.00, an additional $3.00 is charged if the firearm being sold is a taxable sale.

Non-taxable sale - firearm ordered on the internet and delivered to your FFL to transfer to you (or a private FTF sale). You pay $2 for PICS.

Taxable sale - Firearm bought from the FFLs stock (or a special order that the FFL orders, pays for and sells to you). You pay $2 for PICS and a $3 surcharge for it being a taxable sale (don't ask me where that $3 goes, I have no idea and not going to look for the reason)

The PICS information book that all FFL's in PA should have received states that the PICS fee and the surcharge if a taxable sale is NOT sales taxable.
