Default Can a SPR be reverse registered ?

Say I SBR my 9mm carbine. Then in the future I want to sell it as a Non-SBR so that it can be sold to a wider group of customers. Will BATF allow me to take it off the records as an SBR then replace the barrel with a 16" ? Turn in the "Tax Stamp" ?

Yes there is a process for removal of an nfa firearm from the registry or what ever you’d like to call it.

Yes, it can be removed from the NFA registry.

Guess we were typing at the same time Nathan B. And it absolutely is a registry.

Don't forget that it's going to be engraved with your info. That's why most folks consider them "forever my guns" (or at least I do)

Thank you all for your prompt response to my question. Looks like an easier process than I expected. Do you get your $200.00 refunded? HA HA HA HA !!!..... JCB

Yes, once you make it no longer an SBR, it no longer is. You don't really have to notify ATF, but if you do, you'll get a pleasant letter back, after a year or so, thanking you for helping keep the registry up to date.

What you can't do is create a pistol out of something born a rifle. For example, my factory MPX SBR can't become a pistol by taking the stock off and putting on a brace.

But if I manufactured it as an SBR, then I can undo it.

You don't have to send stamp in.

You won't get your tax back.

This is why I have a random AR lower laying around. If I decide to sell a set of components as a rifle, I just swap everything to that lower, and done. Sell it as a pistol? Same thing. My SBR may not always be an SBR, but I will always have that lower because I can configure it however I want.

I realize this doesn't apply to most platforms, but it's the reason why i finally bought an AR platform. Register the one lower, and the doors are open.
