Default Will 5.56 NATO be overtaken by a new caliber?

I'm thinking about building an AR15 rifle sometime in the future. I know that 223 Rem/5.56 NATO is the caliber that dominates the AR platform. But how likely is it that one of the other calibers (224 Valkyrie, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 300 Blackout, etc) will become the new normal for the AR15 platform? I haven't followed it too closely, but I did hear the military was thinking about replacing 5.56.

While the .224 is an excellent round if your shooting is under 600 yards then it's moot.

The military has been talking about replacing the 5.56 since the 80s, until something substantial comes along, i doubt it'll be replaced en mass. Smaller special forces groups field what ever the mission calls for. But for your basic foot soldier, the 5.56 does the job

Maybe 50 years from now 5.56 won't be a NATO cartridge anymore and replaced by something. Nothing I would worry about now or in the next 20 years though. Even if NATO dropped it tomorrow .223 and 5.56 are so popular with so many rifles in the states it will not be going anywhere for a very very long time.

5.56 will be around for many years. I would put more thought into what you want out of your AR build and then look at the barrel configuration that you will need such as contour, weight, twist and chambering.

I have been thinking about doing a 6.5 CM build. I can shoot out to 700 yards at my range. I am down to two ARs now and an M16. No more 5.56 builds for me at this time.

AR15s are so cheap now, people build them in assorted calibers with no regard to the future.

5.56 is cheap. Unless something equal or better comes along at a lower price, it's not going anywhere.

Would anyone have predicted the M16 in 1910?

Might be smart bullets or tiny rockets or lasers or microwave beams or miniature robots that burrow into people.
