Therefore I suspect there were gun banning lobbyist back then but their message did not get out as much. It also is noted that the NRA wasn't that committed into the gun control fight at that time.
I find it interesting sometimes to read media written at the time rather than 20/20 historical perspectives written decades later and if one goes back and reads gun magazines of the time, there were many writers and editors in favor of or open to "gun control" and in fact at the time of the 1968 GCA, SAAMI and many American gun manufacturers were in favor of the 1968 GCA, partly to eliminate or restrict gun imports from overseas.

Life has definitely changed now that anyone can get their opinion out there. Very different from even 30 years ago when media was in the hands of a few.

I found it interesting to review NRA history during this period. It opened the door to a pivotal shift in the organization leading up to the "The Cincinnati Revolution"
Up to this period it could be said at the least they condoned most firearms legislation.
Concerning the GCA of 68, NRA executive vice president Franklin Orth wrote in American Rifleman that "the measure as a whole appears to be one that the sportsmen of America can live with".
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

The problem with that statement is the Second Amendment is NOT about sportsmen.

WWII brought a fever of national patriotism and a love of government. Government was here to protect you. Gun control was for the "others" not "real Americans". You have to look at the political climate of the era to understand how things happened.

Scratch a gun control advocate and reveal a racist every time.

THEY DID! That was how we ended up with the Gun Control Act of 1968, the end of real mail order firearm sales and the requirement to file a form 4473!

That's not blaming the rifle. That's blaming and curtailing easy access to guns in general. Today the targets are "assault rifles", calibers (.50 and over), handgun magazine capacities. Yesterday: Access to guns. Today: Specific guns and accessories.

    I rest.

I understand that, and hence the acquiescence to the "Sporting Purposes" clauses, and references in GCA 1968, and even as far back as the 1934 NFA law.

Bullshit. Just admit you forgot about the 1968 GCA.

Could be for a couple of reasons. The suspected rifle used was an old Italian bolt action. It wasn't anything tactical. It was not a mass shooting. The conspiracy theories overshadow the talk about gun control when talking about the JFK assassination, which is why there was a Warren commission and not a "gun control subcommittee" . In addition the gun control groups where not organized at that time. As already mentioned there was more hatred towards handguns back then and the JFK did influence the 68 gun control act.
