Gunman sees a legitimate threat from the switchblade being pulled.

No evidence that switchblade guy reasonably perceived a deadly threat before he pulled his knife.

Not enough detail on what the preceding "confrontation" consisted of. If I go outside my hotel and tell the shady guys (and subsequent events kind of confirm his appraisal of the switchblade guy) to "go somewhere else", that's a confrontation. So is me telling them "I'll kill you if I catch you near my car". Different things, both "confrontations".

You lose your "stand your ground" protections if you provoke someone, but that provocation has to be something likely to cause a normal person to get violent. Not like today's snowflakes, where not having their candidate win causes them to lash out verbally in extreme ugliness; I'm talking about walking up to some guy and saying "can you still smell my dick on your mom's breath?" He may take a swing at you, and no, you can't shoot him for it.

If the shooter did nothing but protest the presence of vagrants, and the vagrant pulled a knife, then this was an acceptable shooting. Just watch out for the provocations, the law isn't a magic wand, and other prosecutors might have gone differently.

    I'll just leave this here:

Nolan has a criminal record in Oregon dating to 1999, including numerous felony convictions for drugs, theft and assault. He was arrested in 2015 in Bend after challenging three police officers to kill him while he wielded a large knife. He reportedly began cutting his wrists and neck as he ran away.
