Default New 1911 Colt factory crowning: ugly?

    I had a LGS order a Colt 1991 from Davidson's.

I got around to cleaning it, and noticed that this is what the darned crown looks like. Note the 11 o clock area. Looks like bad tooling?

Anyway; should I shoot it at 15 yards and see what comes of it? This is a defensive carry piece and I don't plan on shooting beyond 15 yards.

I don't want to deal with Colt right now. worse case, I could go to a local gunsmith I've talked to and see if he can recrown it and be done.

    Thoughts?

typical of what they have become. damn sad.
if it shoots ok (lay odds it will), shoot the crap out if it, and call it a day.

Thanks for the advice. I have had 5 different Colts in the past 5 years and all but this one we’re pretty perfect. Hopefully this is just cosmetic

    Applies to pistols, as well.

How's colts customer service? I hope good for a likely $1000+ piece. I'd try to get a new barrel or send it to them to recrown if the original barrel was hand fit.

Some people might not care but from your posts you're particular about guns, which again for a $1000 gun I don't blame you.

    Yeah, that's not acceptable.

I would email Colt customer service, attach a couple pictures and a WTF?!?!

Yeah I would not be satisfied with that, I'd send it back to Colt. I'm not paying to recrown an obvious defect, but that's just me.

After production damage imo. Not acceptable. Send it back, I know it sucks. Inspect better next time. I miss dumb shit all the time like that, don’t beat yourself up about it.

God-Awful....bought a 1991 that took "pile of crap" to a new level. colt's response was pretty much sucked to be me.

with them being in bankruptcy, expect worse than this to become the rule, rather than the exception.

Thanks for all the feedback. I know that Colt is not having a good time right now. There is talk that they might not be around in a few years, or things will be drastically different. I wanted to get a stainless 1991 to match my blued 1991, that way I'd have a pair of heirloom type Colts to keep in the family should/when these become more difficult to procure.

Everything else on this pistol is very good. tight fit, tight barrel lockup, perfect extractor tension, thumb safety good to go. Trigger is crisp.

I don't want to deal with Colt right now. I think I'm going to visit a local gunsmith, who I've talked to in the past. It should be a simple job to recrown a 1911.
