Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
We have active and retired Law Enforcement Officers getting arrested and hauled into court because NJ/NY/et al refuse to recognize their valid LEOSA permits.
So I think it would be legal suicide to attempt an overnight FOPA stay in a hostile state.
But if you want to be a test case for the courts then have at it.
The Travel Guide advice is based on what is actually occurring on the streets right now as opposed to a theoretical understanding of the law.
That is why I posted the Guide's practical advice instead of quoting the law.
I think we have a responsibility here to keep the uninformed out of legal jeopardy.
As such, I think it is unwise to recommend an overnight FOPA stay while traveling through hostile states. How can you have any cookies if you don't drink your milk?

Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
I am traveling to KS, so the only state I am worried about other than NJ, is IL but seems we are gonna stop at MS.
Otherwise, my permits cover me AFIAKUna Salus Victis Nullam Sperare Salutem

Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
From my reading, once I get past IL, MO and KS are good states.
So check in to hotel in MO and from then on, pistol can stay on hip till its time to return.
Cool stuff.Una Salus Victis Nullam Sperare Salutem

Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
In the main points listed for each state it will tell you if you are required to notify an officer during a traffic stop.
That is different from state to state, and you don't want to forget and then end up having a problem.
Some states require notification upon first contact. How can you have any cookies if you don't drink your milk?

Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
And the million dollar question, does this travel (multiple state crossing) qualify me for FOPA and legally returning to NJ?
I know if I go to and from PA only, I would make sure to leave from a exempted place.Una Salus Victis Nullam Sperare Salutem

Re: FOPA and Hotel Stays
If your origin or terminus is NJ then it is possible that FOPA would not attach unless you are engaged in one of the exempted professions/activities as specified in NJSA 2C:39-6.
What is the purpose of your trip?
