I have to many kids running around here to have guns staged about house anymore. Wife's 357 is in the bedroom and is the only one loaded besides the one on me. I always have something on me in the house. If I'm in sweats it's a pocket gun, once I'm dressed it's whatever I chose to carry that day. Worst case scenario for a bad guy is if they come in while I'm at the work bench where I spend a good part of my day. I literally have over a dozen handguns and a similar amount of rifles and shotguns in that room at any given time and multiple magazines for most. Hopefully they realize what the sound of an AK bolt slamming home is and rethink they're choices in life before I get upstairs.

A home protection firearm? Personally, I'm a pistol guy. But in my home there are no kids or anyone I have to worry about as collateral damage. That being said, for the new shooter who might or might not dedicate some time to training and proficiency and might want a firearm the wife can handle also. I recommend a 20 ga. semi-automatic shotgun loaded with something between BB and No. 1 Buckshot size. Heck even Sportsman's Guide sells #3 Buckshot loads from Federal!
