Rented a 686 6" today what little experience I have that is a damn accurate gun. It took me 400 rounds to get that accurate with my 1911

In the case of .500S&W, I may want to look into porting. For 357mag, I don't have a need to, as I handle recoil just fine no matter what the loading.
Mag-na porting, factory porting or good gunsmith porting is money well spent if you shoot heavy loads or need fast follow-up shots. The only downside that I see is a little more awareness of noise. Since we all wear GOOD ear and eye protection this is should not be a problem. If you think of shooting without protection call me sometime and I will tell you what it is like to not be able to understand your grandchildren when they talk to you.

The 686 also has the advantage of being able to shoot 38 specials as well.

If the 1911 is not an option..

In a large caliber Next to a 1911, the HK MK23 is the most accurate handgun I have ever fired.

The Sig 226 X-Five is second..

And I am very impressed with the S&W M&P 9 pro series w/ 5" barrel.

Any well-built revolver will completely blow away most semiauto handguns, including high dollar 1911 jobs, when it comes to straight accuracy. When's the last time you heard of someone shooting a Glock at 300, 400, even 500 yards? A well trained shooter can reliably hit stuff at those ranges with a .44 Magnum wheelgun. Granted this is a combination of accuracy and power of caliber needed to get to those distances with minimal drop.

The most accurate autoloaders would probably be the IMI/Magnum Research Desert Eagle and FN Five-seveN. Both of these guns fire rounds that have high muzzle velocities and little drop, and both are gas operated which reduces/eliminates barrel movement while the bullet travels down the barrel.
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.

    I never fired a DE, so I can't verify.

But I completely forgot the FN Five-Seven.
    Extremely accurate.
I have one, and I can't believe that I forgot to mention it.

I think that the S&W 625 in 45ACP and a 5" barrel is still made. Extremely accurate particularly with 0.45 wadcutters. If we stretch a little (and these are guns that I own, including the 625), I would add (all S&W) a model 66, 67, 586 and in particular, a 6" barreled Model 14 with target sights (but off the shelf). Then in the semiauto department, a 745 and the most accurate, a Model 52. I cannot do justice to their inherent accuracy, but from a rest, almost all are one-hole groups at 10-15 yds.

Now if you want to have some fun with people enamored with the latest in "plastic water-pistols!" then I will bring out two S&W MkIIs with 6.5" barrels, one in 0.455 the other cut for 0.45 AR (dating from 1917 and 1915 respectively) and add in a 1905 6.5 inch 38 Special. No fancy sights, just the standard groove and half moon, but in single action at 7 yds, all 6 shots touching a 1 inch circle (and these are 90+ to 100+ years old guns). I have shot a SIG 210-4 and yes, the 9 mm cartridge is quite accurate; just wish I could afford to own one. Dave_n
