Default Looking for someone to replace S&W 586 Front Sight

Specifically looking for someone near Allentown who can do it while I wait, even if it costs more. My local smith wants to hold a gun hostage for months and I will miss it too much while it's gone. Any help?

CDI is in your area. Contact him and see what he has to say. He's one of the Good Guys!

Do you have a replacement site or do you need one?

I have the sight. It needs to be drilled and installed.

I'm not sure the point of your post... are you a gunsmith in the area? Are you pointing me toward one? Or are you simply leaving nondescript posts about how something "might take a little time" in defense of the unnamed gunsmith I talked to?

If it was just a simple site replacement I could have done it or helped you replace it. Keeping your gun for a month is excessive, even if drilling is required. While I have drilled and tapped guns that were mine, I wouldn't do it on someone else's. Good luck!

Just throwing it out there but if you can’t come across someone to do it for you there’s not too much involved. There’s no tapping of the holes. Simply hold the new site in place and mark it with a mechanical pencil from both ends. The important part is to drill the new sight blade from both sides if doing it by hand. Then reinstall and simply tap your pin back in. There’s pretty much no way to harm the firearm although you can obviously mess up the blade.

Here is a brief summary of my DIY S&W front sight swap:

First of all, the factory roll pin is smaller than 1/16". I don't have and couldn't find a pin punch that small, so I beat a drill bit through there and dicked up the factory roll pin in the process.

I then decided to drill the revolver and new front sight to 1/16" (two drill bit sizes bigger) and install a 1/16" roll pin. I got roll pins and drill bits from brownels.

I used a hand drill and locked the revolver in a vise with some pine wood scraps that wouldn't marr the finish. I held the new sight in place with a couple vise clamps and more wood. Then I marked the drill bit at the desired depth with electrical tape and drilled halfway from each side. Finally, I knocked in the new roll pin and alls well.

It wasn't that difficult to do it myself, you just gotta sack up and do it. Otherwise you can pay somebody else and deal with the fact that probably no one will do it while you wait.
