I'd hate to march in support of "gun rights" only to find out later that the guy should not have even been near a gun.
Please re-read the OP, and any comments made by those of us actually planning on doing this. Indicate to me where any of us have said. "The guy they locked up it totally legit and sane" or "The police were completely out of line in what they did in that specific situation."

If the Chief's own comments about rights are truly how he feels, and an example of how that department operates, that's great.

Situation #1 - Probably no out of line action by police, and involving an individual who truly may need treatment.

Situation #2 - We're not sure, but it will likely help clarify the overall reality, and perhaps add some clarity to what happened the first time around. It definitely involves individuals who have a strong history in 2A activism and have never been accused of being mentally unstable or inclined to act vioently. These same individuals have tens of thousands of words of online content as an underlying foundation of their beliefs and dedication to the actual exercise of their rights, and numerous examples of previous public exercise of them, even including the previous public carry of long guns.

What's the sense of having a Right if you're afraid to exercise that Right?

You can talk about it on a web forum that's hidden from the public?

    *Just a guess

The sense is, the kid in question may indeed be anything from a nut-job to simply an immature personality going out of his way to make a point with the local fuzz.
We don't know because no one has contacted him and asked him to share the police reports.

The sense is, your "right" to open carry is fairly easy to erase with a stroke of the legislative pen, it's an election year.
GunLawyer brought all this up. If you think your right to open carry is immune to public opinion, look East my friend. N.J. has no open carry law.
It will come here unless we choose our fights wisely.

So, let me get this straight, if the kid isn't nuts and he's just a victim of an over zealous government, you think he did everything wrong? Likewise, you believe this June 16th rally is also wrong?

And by your last statement, you believe it's okay to have a right as long as it doesn't piss off the LEFT? To what degree are you willing to take this argument? Because trust me, this public opinion you speak of is nothing more than not wanting to piss off the LEFT. I guess the folks in Maryland have been beat up so much that most are tired and aren't willing to take any more crap about our God given right to self defense and the Right to keep and bear arms.

You will find that you won't be able to give the LEFT enough. Give them a little and they'll want a lot more. Give them alot and that will never be good enough. Take it from a servant of the Socialist People's Republic of Maryland, if you don't use it, you will lose it.

You end your comment about fighting wisely. Can you please explain that comment to me? Is it wise to put your light under a basket? Is it right to never speak the unspeakable? When you find yourself looking at where your rights went, it will be too late to fight the wise fight. Wisdom is knowing when it's time to fight. If you don't think it's time to fight back, then you doomed to your own reality.

I see a lot of good argument on both sides of this issue. I look forward to seeing how it all pans out and hope for the best for your rally.

Remington788, and SgtRecon, I think your sense of humor is broken. Might want to get that looked at.

The anti gun ads being run by leftist politicians should be getting everyone fired up to go out and vote, and to go out and campaign against these people and for pro gun candidates between now and the general election. The date of our walk being before the primaries is irrelevant. Primaries are within a given political party. So the democrats are going to select an anti gun candidate in their primary whether we do this or not.

You're more inciteful then I am. I can't see any sense in this at all, unless the purpose is to gin up the liberal base.
When most of the people on a gun forum think it's a bad idea, it's probably a bad idea.
