There are rumors of both NATO and Warsaw Pact weapons caches all over Europe left over from the Cold War and forgotten about. Some were to be for resupply and smaller stockpiles were to arm the locals after Germany was overrun by the Soviets. The author of the SEAL TEAM books (sorry, I forget the name) mentions them a couple of times in his writings. Imagine being a farmer in rural Germany or Poland and having discovering a bunker buried in your field.... So cool!

Did you hear about the two Polacks who froze to death at the drive in movie theater? They went to see Closed for Season.

Sheesh that's like the old question "Why do Lithuanians pour oil on their gardens?" Answer: To keep the guns from rusting.

Not saying they are common, but Youtube relic hunter videos are full of weapon finds. The ones that are posted are typically in ruined relic condition, but it makes one wonder.

A now deceased friend found a cache while in the army back around 1979. It was a complete bunker full of weapons: MP40s, STG 44s, MG 42s, etc...

The locals knew all about it. Nobody had touched it for nearly 40 years because it was booby trapped to high heaven. The German army ended up clearing out the place.
