Default Rem. 700 caliber change - suggestions?

I have a Remington 700 LSS in .30-06 that I an in the process of upgrading. This will strictly be a range toy, but will be used for long distance out to 1000 yards. I know the .30-06 can easily reach that far, but I wanted to do something different as far as caliber. Looking over the different cartridges based on the .30-06, the .35 Whelen looks interesting, as does the .338-06. However, both look to be rather spendy in terms of loading components and equipment. The .25-06 looks promising, in terms of availability and cost of components.

What say you all? Any other suggestions? Bear in mind, the only thing I want to do for the caliber change is to rebarrel the rifle. No modifications to bolt face, etc.

    I vote for this...

    http://www.chuckhawks.com/6-5mm-06.htm

No personal experience, just like 6.5 mm cartridges.

I'd think 7mm/08 might be a good choice. A wide range of available bullet weights and less powder in a flat shooting caliber. I think that would make for an interesting and practical upgrade in the 700. Or go classic with a 7x57 Mauser. Having .243, .270, 7x57, &-06 I feel the .25-06 is a impracticable and unnecessary cartridge. I'm sure I'll hear about it, but I don't like .25-06s.

My vote would be .280 Rem.

Personally, I think you’re fixing something that’s not broke within the 06.

But I guess if pressed I’d have to agree with ianb, and just go down to a 7mm round out of a .280.

Best of luck with your project.

Of what has been mentioned, this is probably the best for long range. There is a good selection of very high BC bullets available in 6.5mm. The 6.5/06 is basically a 6.5-284 in a long action.

Another choice might be the 6mm Remington being sure to have the rifling twist in your barrel fast enough to handle the new high BC 6mm bullets

what about 30-06 improved ? You could possibly use the same barrel and just have it set back and rechambrred . The 338-06 is a good round also I don't see how it's anymore pricy to reload for than anything else though dies are fairly common its be around for a while . If one of your goals in some 1000yd target now and then I'd either stay 30 cal or go with 280 or something 6.5 cal

Others gave good recommendations, so I'll just toss this out there . . .

I have a 50+ year old Rem 700 BDL, 24" factory barrel, decent hunting rifle, but couldn't hold 1.50 moa once warmed up. Rebarreled it with a 26" Krieger chambered to allow (eg) 175gr bullets to seat close to the lands. 0.5 to 0.75 moa even fired by my old hands and eyes. 1200 yds was easy to negotiate, though 1 mile with 175gr TMKs at 2900+ fps proved than a little challenging lol.

Point is the 30-06 cartridge doesn't give up much, if anything, to the smaller calibers mentioned other than perhaps heavier recoil. Even that is mitigated by the weight of a long, heavy barrel and scope off the bench.

So . . . an alternative to "a different caliber for variety" might be to chamber a quality long barrel in 30-06 for a specific bullet(s) of your choice for precision.

So what would be the cost to have the work done to change the caliber and barrel, length compared to buying a new 700

You are looking at $600-750 to rebarrel...at that point why not just buy a new rifle and call it a day? Unless that rifle has sentimental value, I wouldn't think it would be worth spending the money to rebarrel.
