serial numbers

I have read through some other posts. I see sometimes when a person asks a question they get labeled. I really hope that doesn't happen for me as I would like to stick around for awhile. So the question is..." Why cover serial numbers? And for that matter license plate numbers? Here is my mind set...If its my gun registered to me what could "you" do with those numbers to hinder me in any way". As far as cars go you could go to any walmart parking lot and pick a plate. Is it something i am not seeing. Just a general discussion I do not want to get crazy with the replies please. But I am open to education on this.

Just good practice to limit exposure when it's not necessary.
People walk down the street and choose not to billboard their name/address/phone for the same reason, it's unnecessary exposure so best to limit it.
Some people care more than others and take extra privacy precautions, some care less and don't bother.
Basically the same concept plays out on the internet, except that everything is cataloged in real time so the exposure is more relevant.
