“No Firearms” signs in state buildings.

Can a state office post “No Firearms” signs outside of their offices?

I know private buildings/employers can do that, but I’m curious if public/state facilities can do so. Does the preemption law come into play here?

The state does not own the building, they lease it. It’s also not a state building that deals with any law enforcement or corrections matters. It’s a human services building.

Any thoughts?

York Co. Admin budding would not let me in with pepper spray before going throiugh a metal detector. I was nice about it and the guard offered to hold it for me instead of making me take it to my car a few blocks away.

As far as I know there's no judicial/court offices there, I was going to the Recorder of Deeds office.

The law says you can't carry in FEDERAL offices including VA Hospitals, schools, detention facilities, casinos or courthouses...but unless they're being lenient on the court definition to include a law office of any kind, I think they're stretching their application of the carry laws. The PA Capitol is a no-go because of court offices.

My interpretation is that a local or State office with no court dealings SHOULD be allowed, but it's not always done properly.

I think you might be wrong about the schools. “For other legal purposes” clause as argued by Joshua Prince last year or so, set a legal precedent saying that you can in fact carry in a school.
As for casinos... never heard of that.

County Courthouses are supposed to have lockboxes available for you to store your gun (I’ve used one in Montgomery Co. once).

I believe that municipalities cannot create their own laws that that are more restrictive than state law. Like when Philly tried to pass a law banning guns from parks. So, I’m curious if the state DHS is overstepping its authority by banning guns from a state office building.

I think it would depend on what is housed in the building.
