Took a friend turkey hunting a couple years back, he never went for turkey before he brought a home defense shotgun first no no. I locate a bunch of gobbles and started calling back and forth, they were about 1/4 mike away start calling and advancing towards the gobbles. Suddenly a hen comes tearing towards us and 4 Toms come behind strutting and cutting around idiot pulls the trigger at 40yds with home defense shotgun bye bye toms.
First turkey I got I roosted at night just practicing, next day a neighbor jumped my spot and lined up in front of me, started calling then he was gobbling then a bang. He wounded it and it still came to me got it with a ancient double barrel at 20yds.

So did you act as a mentor and help your friend learn about hunting turkeys, and what a good choice of firearm would be? And teach him how to pattern his gun and figure out what his ethical range was?

And was the home defense shotgun the only gun he had? If so, I'd rather him bring it anyways, stay in the woods to learn and get interested... You said yourself that you managed to get turkeys with an old double barrel... Certainly not the same as some of the 3.5" 12ga (or 10ga) turkey guns out there in the same vane as a HD shotgun...
