    Default Can afford one.

    Hi all
Would like opinions on the following.
    22-Ruger GP 100
    22-S&W 617
    Thanks
I'd rather have a gun in my hand then a cop on the phone.

Interesting choices, I have a 317 airweight .22 , and the ruger SP101 in .357 - I would love either of the ones you mentioned, but can't justify the price-point. I want to follow this thread to see what others have to say.

    I’ve always wanted a 617! so there’s my vote
Go head, skin it. Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.

My pick will always be a Smith over a Ruger any day. Out up some pics in the what did you buy today thread.

    I have a few gp100s in 357 but not the 22 (yet).
I do have the 617 and it’s a wonderful gun I bought speedloaders and blocks for it and they should also work with the gp100 as both are 10 shots
I also have the j frame 22 model 63 5” Barrel which is nice too but no longer sold
You can’t go wrong with either choice.
My suggestion - get both ! For the expense think of all the money you will save in the long run with ammo!
    That’s how I justify things ...

I bought the Ruger and I love it. I installed a spring kit in it and the hammer spring wasn't tight enough so I had to go back to the OEM one.

Also, if you're fine with used, consider a Dan Wesson 22. I love the interchangeable barrel system.

I have an SP101-22 and like it overall. My only gripe is that the trigger is fairly heavy. I've read that it's a bit heavier than other 22 revolvers, but haven't fired any to compare with. The weight isn't an issue for me, but it might be frustrating for kids. I plan on snagging a Ruger Mark IV for plinking with the kids.

We looked at the SP101-22 and immediately both of us said no as a terrible trigger - hard as hell for a 22. I read with a trigger job though its a great gun
The Ruger Marks are great guns - especially the hunter or competition. I have the III in those and enjoy them although somewhat finicky with ammo.

The 617 is my pick, every day of the week. The build quality is excellent and the warranty service is impeccable. I have had a couple of 617s and the blued steel version (17-6 and 17-8). All were excellent tack drivers. I enjoy quality and will gladly pay for it, when the price difference is so small.

The price difference between the Smith and the Ruger is less than one case of .22 LR. For those that shoot quite a bit, the real cost is ammo, not the shooting iron. Buy good stuff, life is short.
