    To suit your needs as you listed them RIGHT now.. I have had 2 AK variants and didn't like either..
    I would suggest a SKS in 7.62x39 Great rifle with many inexpensive upgrades out on the market. There are several on www.Armslist.com in Pennsylvania for under $500
    I recently did a SG Bullpup and love the rifle more

    The AR would eventually stop a bear with right shot placement and enough shots.. but the 5.56/.223 (Make sure to get one chambered for 5.56) does not carry a lot of energy

    *****However.. get an AR lower you can change uppers and shoot a variety of calibers and you can upgrade later to .300 or .308 or .50 etc.. get a good one, don't go cheap and buy twice
