CMP M1 Garand recommendations?
I live in Pittsburgh and I’m wondering if it will be worth the drive to the CMP store at Fort Perry or if I’d be just as good having one shipped. Also, if I order one - what grade/level would be best? Also tips for instore would be great to have. I hear some have war time dates but have no idea how to identify one or if anything like that would be on the shelf there.

Re: CMP M1 Garand recommendations?
Depends what you're into.
Camp Perry is about 3 hours from Pittsburgh.
I drove to Camp Perry from Philly and didn't regret it.
You may want to call ahead to see what their current stock looks like.
When there is a scare sometimes their stock gets low.
The stock is also inconsistent and varies anyway.
If you go, the people are very helpful and should be able to show you what you are looking for.
If you order online you will get what you pay for in terms of grade etc.
If you are just looking for something to shoot then you really should be ok.
If you are a collector looking for serial numbers that's a different thing and not my area.
I've ordered online and gone in person and I have never been disappointed with CMP.
But it's been several years since I made a purchase from them. How can you have any cookies if you don't drink your milk?

I ordered mine online.. beautiful firearm, but at the time I didn't know you could visit the store and pick/choose the one you wanted because if I did, that's what I would have done. It's a history lesson / field trip / shopping trip, sounds like a win to me.

Typically the guns at Camp Perry that you can pick up and fondle before buying are the Rack an Field grade but you can find some good ones even in these grade at times. I would say to buy the best you can afford, you won't be disappointed. I ordered, a few years ago a Service grade and when I received it, it was more like a Correct to Collector grade. Guess I got lucky.
That said, at Camp Perry you can buy barrels, stocks, ammo, M1 carbine magazines, just about everything that is on their site. It's the only place that you go through a metal detector on the way out

It's worth the trip. We don't know how lucky we are being only a few hours away. Call or check the CMP forums for what's there before you go.
