Just out of curiousity, why do you want one if you already have a license to carry? The material presented herein is for informational purposes only, is not guaranteed to be correct, complete, or up to date, does not constitute legal advice and does not establish an attorney-client relationship. Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
As Rule eluded to, if you have a license to carry, you do not need a sportsman's license.

Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
The issuances of a Sportsman’s Firearm Permit allows the individual to carry a firearm if such persons are actually hunting, taking furbearers, fishing or training dogs, or are going to the places where they desire to hunt, take furbearers, fish, or train dogs during the regular training season, or returning from such places. A Sportsman's Firearm Permit is NOT a License to Carry a firearm concealed.
I think the Game commission requires the sportsman permit to hunt with a handgun. If you hunt and have a concealed weapon with a ccw for protection they dont care, but don't use it for hunting. I had this discussion with a gc officer while chuck hunting and all was well.

Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
This quote comes for the PGC's 2006 Pennsylvania Digest, I believe on pag 8
"Firearms - Handguns: A Sportsman’s Firearms permit or a License
to Carry a Firearm is required to carry a handgun concealed or
in a motor vehicle. Licenses to Carry a Firearm are issued by county
sheriffs or the Philadelphia Chief of Police. A License to Carry a Firearm
does not entitle the licensee to spotlight wildlife while in possession
of a firearm. County treasurers issue Sportsman’s Firearms Permits.
A person holding a Sportsman’s Firearms Permit may not carry a
loaded handgun in a vehicle."
The officer you were taking to needs to learn the game comission regs.

Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
As already stated, a license to carry is sufficient for hunting. Why do you think there is a check box on the application for hunting? By the way, whatever reason you check, the license is good for ALL reasons listed, not just the checked box.
A Sportsman's Permit is NOT needed in order to hunt if you have the license to carry.

Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
I had another thought on this discussion, most of us with a ccw permit carry a semi-auto ( not all ) and the gc rules never did allow a semi-auto handgun for hunting unless the law changed. The permit conflict between the gc and other issuing agencys is nothing new, and for a few dollars its better to be legal than get hassled out in the field. My discussion about this was with Mark Rutkowski (sp) the Lacka. county GC officer about 2 years ago who was yery knowledgeble and a freindly.

Re: i need to get a sportsman permit
The sportsmen permit is a lesser permit than the LTCF. The LTCF covers everything that the sportsmen permit does AND then some.
You DO NOT need a sportsmen permit if you have a LTCF.
You WILL need a fishing or hunting license if involved in either of those activities though.Drew Bingaman Chair Susquehanna Valley Libertarian Party
