224 Valkyrie ?

Never knew this round existed till I stumbled on this post . Interesting albeit not much different than the new offering from Nosler . Still sorta a specialized use kinda thing if you want to take advantage of what it offers over the regular 223 rd. Sort of the same concept from years and years ago like 100 plus yrs ago for the 22 Newton and 1938 with the 228 ackley magnum. Much larger cases and higher vel but again with the very long high BC 90 gr bullets .
Again interesting but certainly no more useful for most shooters than the 223 with 77gr bullets

What's old is new again. I think the difference is ammo manufacturers are on board with this and producing.

I get bored with shooting the same stuff and like trying new things. It sort of keeps me interested in going to the range and trying new loads and dialing stuff in.

I have been seeing 6.5 grendel, 6.8 spc and standard .223/5.56 ar mags being used with the .224 valk. Likely depends on the magazine and rifle.

The Valkyrie uses 6.8 SPC brass. No point to using any magazine other than a 6.8 SPC mag if you want to ensure reliability.

I started with a Stoner upper from Midway in 22 Nosler,What a piece of crap that turned out to be. Rips brass to pieces,handguard bolts stripped out and had to use an AGB just to get my brass back. Switched over to the Nosgar version with a Ballistic Advantage barrel and Aero m4e1 upper. They must have got the gas port right because I'm running a regular low pro gas block(rifle gas)and it's dumping brass at 4 oclock about 4 ft away. Still getting things broke in but have a couple loads under 1/2 moa.

Doesn't matter what the parent case is, how it works matters. The factory guys (Federal/JP sponsored) have been using several different magazines, not just 6.8 mags.

Source, please. I've not found any instance where someone has recommended anything but 6.8 SPC magazines.

Yeah 6.8 is what most manufacturers are recommending doesn't mean others will not work. MAC, 22plinkster and guys on other forums whom actually have .224valk, all using a mix of .223/5.56, 6.5 and 6.8. Some work better than others. I have AR mags I use with calibers that are not even the same parent case they are marketed for, they function 100%. You start getting into oddball stuff you try different mags and see what works the best. Don't believe = I could really care less. When you have magazines already you use what you can.

I never said other mags wouldn't work. I think it's foolish to use a mag not designed for the cartridge. I can get a 10 rounds of 6.8 SPC into a 30 round 5.56 AR mag, but I can get 25 in all of my 25 round 6.8 mags. And the 6.8 mags run 100% with 6.8, unlike the 5.56 mags with 6.8. It's not like 6.8 mags are hard to come by or expensive.

As for 22Plinkster and MAC, the first video they did going over the .224 Valkyrie was after they shot a rifle that was purpose built for the round using 6.8 mags. And the subsequent videos 22Plinkster has done for .224 Valkyrie have also been with the same rifle using the same mags. He may have said you COULD use .224 Valkyrie in a 5.56 mag, but he never said you SHOULD. He's sponsored by Federal. Why would he advocate using a mag that wasn't designed to work with their cartridge?

That's all I've got to say about that.
