Default Cocked hammer with the cylinder open?

So I attended a class this pass weekend. The instructor was a 30 year veteran of the PPD. I bought along a S&W 19 on top of my Glock 19 hoping to learn some revolver skills on top as well. When handling my 19 at the start of class the instructor opened the cylinder and cocked the hammer back with the cylinder open which I thought was not possible with out hand tools. Any idea how?

Should work on any S&W, holding the latch to the rear clears the bolt out of the way for the hammer to move.

Instructor was playing with your head, lol. Maybe wanted to see you fumble around and replicate his move ! Yes cylinder latch pushed forward will do it !
