I was taught a while back to use bronze wool, so there is no rust issues with steel wool residue, and there is a newer product which I recently tried and it seems to work well also. See http://www.big45.com/

Also some time in the recent past, there was a picture of someone using a empty 45 case in place of your missing cap, but it was on a standard 45 with a bushing to hold it in place. I tried to find it but have not succeeded.
