opinions on an M1 Garand
I have the opportunity to buy an M1 Garand. I have always wanted one and I could spring for it now but I wanted to see what you guys think first. It has an H&R receiver, Springfield bolt and trigger group. LMR barrel. The serial is 5.7 million. There are some spots on the wood but overall the rifle is in very good condition. It comes with a period correct sling and a bayonet. The fellow wants $1,000. My thought is that that's an OK deal but not amazing. What do you guys think?

Re: opinions on an M1 Garand
I'd have someone put some gauges to it first. Then you can better determine if the deal is good.

Re: opinions on an M1 Garand
Agree with both above.
If you meet all the qualifications (pretty easy) you could have a nice CMP Garand for $730 delivered but it will be luck of the draw and take a few weeks.
Or you can usually find one on the CMP forum for $850-$900.
I'd want to know how it gauges before buying as well as if it's import marked. Personally I'd pass unless he comes down at least $100 and depending on the ME/TE readings and import status. Lots of Garands out there and $1000 is not great for an HRA.

Re: opinions on an M1 Garand
You are correct that it is just an OK deal for a mix master garand of assorted manufacturer parts. But that's not saying it could have been mixed that way in an arsenal rebuild. depending on the bayonet, that alone could be a $100 value. if it gauges nicely I'd offer $900 with the bayonet. I've bought one that swallowed the gauges and still shot pretty good
There will be a day when they are all in the hands of collectors, one thing for sure the prices will not be going down. And another thing to consider is with all the stupid liberal ban bills being pushed lately the M1 is not specifically listed on any of them....this also has some value

I bought my SA M1 Garand from the CMP quite a few years ago. I would go that route again and save a few bucks.

Im with everyone else on the CMP boat. The remaining money you saved can get you started on an entry level stash of ammo to feed it.

Meh. Not a bad deal, but not a really good other either.
