theres a very good chance it was sitting on top of the wire for the golden rod. the wire just lays on the floor of the safe and then passes through a hole in the back.

Clean it up, coat it in Cosmoline, won't rust again.

Basement is the problem. Mouse probibly pissed on it.

It does look like the sock is the culprit with the fibers and the way the rust crawls up the butt plate.

Might be good to forego the sock. If your basement is 30% humidity, you shouldn't have any problem.

How often do you look in your safe and inspect? I try to check mine often.

its only half underground. that and i use a humidifier in the summer
