    Clean it up, coat it in Cosmoline, won't rust again.

    It does look like the sock is the culprit with the fibers and the way the rust crawls up the butt plate.

    Might be good to forego the sock. If your basement is 30% humidity, you shouldn't have any problem.

    How often do you look in your safe and inspect? I try to check mine often.

    its only half underground. that and i use a humidifier in the summer
