You are right. It is the universal rifle. Perfect for any purpose, usable by any user in any condition under any circumstances.

Great quote from that well written piece about the AR.

There is a difference between routine maintenance (upkeep) and constant repair (lemon).

I believe it’s early issues from the sixties have been worked out favorably.

But reliability without routine maintenance may be something a buyer is looking for. Some cars do a lot better at that than others.

In any event...given some of the comments here, it sounds like the AR isn’t “universal” at all, even on its own merits. It sounds like an awful lot depends on which one you get and what kind of ammo you are using.

Since the "ammo" blows right back into the heart of the mechanism, yah the gun is wholly dependent on the "ammo".

Nope. Gotta turn it into a completely irrelevant topic.

Instead of using the info as a basis to refute claims of antis, we gotta argue about reliability.

    LOL! Forums...
The problem with the o.p. is its too good. It covers everything. We have nothing left to offer on that subject. It's why we all own a few of them.

P.S. except Free. Canadian's still use FALs.

    OK, I'll bite:

What is the "datsun 210" of guns. The gun that will run and run and run without routine maintenance, with shitty ammo, etc?

Datsun 210 coupe. My first car.

The Ar15 can be had in a gazillion configurations, in umpteen-thousand different calibers, and more than one operating system.

The text in the OP isn't stating that AN(one) AR15 is the single, most bestest, and versatile rifle known to man - it's stating the fact that there isn't a more versatile, "universal" (it can be had in any configuration, for any need desired) rifle around.

I dunno. But whatever it is, it probably isn’t “universal” either.
