Default A Psychiatrist Examines the Anti-Gun Mentality

Found this posted on the 1911 Forum which I frequent: http://www.rense.com/general33/antigun.htm

A fascinating read. It's old, but still very relevant. Maybe more so now.

    I read the whole article.
It's about 11 pages long, but it has a lot of spacing so it's a quick read.
Basically it's a psychological evaluation of the reasons people become anti gun and anti self defense.
Then it systematically reviews the best ways to counter and engage someone who is anti gun based on their psychological profile.

In a sentence, if you understand why your opponent thinks what he thinks, then you can effectively counter his irrational anti gun ideology and bring him back to the light.
It's worth the time to read it.
I would also add that I more or less employ the techniques described in the article, and I have a good track record of turning anti gun people into gun owners.

    clipped from article :

If I were to summarize this article in three sentences, they would be:

    (1) People who identify themselves as "victims" harbor excessive amounts of rage at other people, whom they perceive as "not victims."

    (2) In order psychologically to deal with this rage, these "victims" utilize defense mechanisms that enable them to harm others in socially acceptable ways, without accepting responsibility or suffering guilt, and without having to give up their status as "victims."

    (3) Gun owners are frequently the targets of professional victims because gun owners are willing and able to prevent their own victimization.

So in short, anti gun = sociopath

People are afraid of what they don't understand.
Does that make me a Psychiatrist now?

While I share your sentiment, the article is more involved than that.
The point the writer is making is that instead of just saying someone is an anti-gun nut, take the time to understand why they are an anti-gun nut, and then you can turn them into a sane pro-gun human being.
The writer wants people to stop dismissing anti-gun people as nuts, because it is counter productive to the overall goal of protecting rights and lives.
It's the slow burn approach, the methodical chess match as opposed to the kick to the nads.
I have been taking this approach for many years and it does work, but it takes time, patience, and an understanding of the anti-gun psychology.
The writer is a doctor who made the effort to print it all out like an instruction manual.
    It is worth the read.
