HR 922 Serial # B2752 versus SW 38 Special CTG Serial # 910463
My mother is giving my daughter her choice between an HR 922 Serial # B2752 versus SW 38 Special CTG Serial # 910463 both in excellent condition with holsters. Would appreciate suggestions, recommendations and info about date of manufacture and value.

The Smith & Wesson, without a doubt. A picture would be nice otherwise this is all guesswork. Probably a Hand Ejector Military & Police. If that is the correct serial number (from the bottom of the grip frame) and there is no alphabetic prefix, it dates to somewhere between 1940 and 1945 - probably late within that period. It is the precursor to the Model 10. Value is hard to determine without seeing the gun. There are literally millions of these out there, so condition becomes very important. If it is, as you say, in excellent condition, then $400 - $500, but most of these go in the $300 - $400 range. Far better than the H&R.

Thank you! Daughter did send photos... I will try to post them. The 38 doesn't look as good as she said. The 922 is brass and white metal hardware ....

With the S, it could be well post war II but before the Model 10 marking which came in around the early 1950s. Will have to check my S&W "encyclopedia" Dave_n

Dave n is correct - post-war, 1945 to 1948. Probably somewhere in the middle of that range. Hard to see condition from those photos but probably the lower end of the range previously quoted. One thing the photos do show is it is definitely the better choice of the two offered, although I'm not an H&R specialist (unfortunately the forum H&R specialist passed several years back), but unless it is some unique and highly collectible variant - which is beyond doubtful - go with the Smith.

The H&R was made in 1941. B = 1941.
There was a metric shit ton of them made over the years, only only a couple select versions command any premium. Certain barrel lengths, years of production, finish, etc offer better value than others.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

In that condition I would go with the gun that is more fun to shoot. Are they family heirlooms? Is someone else in the family getting the one you do not choose?
Some people just plain suck.
