Best shooting bag filler?

To follow up on what XHunter and MT1 said. A bag of play sand from any box home improvement store and used denim jeans. A bag of sand will fill quite a few shooting bags. I place the sand in some large freezer baggies before sewing shut. If it gets wet the sand stays dry or if the bag wears through at some point the sand will stay in place.

Paper targets and magazine reloaders. First Aid/trauma kit. Stapler. Tape. A Sharpie. Maybe I'm thinking of some other kind of shooting/range bag? I dunno why you'd need packing material in a range bag.

Thanks for the ideas. I was originally thinking sand and then did some research and thought there may be a better filler. I think I was on the right track in the first place. Since I may shoot my SKS on it as well I think sand wins.

Sand is best. If you want to save a little weight some people use cat litter (preferably unused).

If you are macho enough to use multiple bags of lead shot good for you.

You want something that does not compress.

That's the route I went mostly because I had a huge unopened bag if it that the previous owner of my house left behind. I will admit I peed in just a little of it before I filled the bag.

I've taken the blue jean route. They work very well, and are free (if you use your worn out ones)

For filler, I've tried sand and cat litter. I did not put either in Ziploc bags first. I went away from sand and cat litter because of the dust coming thru the jeans.

Currently, I have 3 jean bags filled with dried black beans from Giant. These are going on 4 years now. Work OK.

many grains are dirt cheap in large bags and you can even try the farm store. or wood pellets. $5 for 40lb. i usually block that out of my mind since i carry so many of the stupid bags. (what a customer heats with in a season, we will carry a day, if not more.)

Edit: going into grains and stuff is veering away from moisture suitability, if you're like me you might wanna stick to rocks...

Recently I busted out the sewing machine and started making my own bags. I used poly pellets purchased in bulk off eBay. Not as cheap as I would've expected but they work great. Don't have to worry about them getting wet or mice getting into them.
