Even in the military , a person under the rank of E-4 will very rarely be issued a handgun , regardless of age.

If they let someone get a firearm because they get it in the military, I would have a lot more machine guns in my gun safe. Lol

The need for one in the military has no connection to the need for one in civilian life

Yes, a PA County Sheriff can transfer a handgun during a private sale to someone 18 to 20 if both residents are from PA. I doubt you will find a sheriff to do this, but it is legal. Check this thread out.

I remember this because an attorney on this forum had to set me straight about this... and it reminded me that I still had things to learn even after being an FFL for a few years.

Is that the way it is now?

Each FMF Corpsman always had assigned 1911s when deployed stashed with the armorer.

But that was from 1978 to 1983.

How many E-3 or below HM's were fully qualified and deployed to a squad? I was Navy '79-83 and most E-3s and below didn't even get to shoot pistols after their 10shots with a .22 1911 during boot camp.

I first carried a 1911 and then later a Beretta M9 starting as an E2 back in 1985 to 1988.

Since when? I was active duty Marine from 1979-1983 and every 18 year old gunner on a crew served weapon (M60 Machinegun or 60mm mortar) was issued a handgun. Back then it was a 1911.

Navy corpsmen, attached to our grunt platoon carried sidearms.

Maybe in the Navy, but in the Army every tank crewman regardless of age was issued 1911's and then M9's (86-90) Rank was irrelevant.

Yes , in those jobs. But in general , not many sailors E-3 and below even got to shoot/qualify back then.
