Re: Alternatives to AR's for shooting 5.56
There is Steyr AUG but the price is around $1800.00 The original SIG MCX recently came down in price ever since SIG released the Virtus version. You might be able to find one between 1200-1400. As someone already mentioned the Galil Ace now is in 556 cal. They are about 1600.
When considering the Bren, there is going to be an upgraded model coming out; CZ Bren 2. According to the video below at about 2:30 the CZ rep explains they anticipate release in late 2018. It has numerous upgrades including a last round hold open. So if you are considering a Bren it might be a good idea to wait for the new model. The release of the new model might push the price down on the existing one.

A Bren for less than $1400 shipped is a pretty good deal in my book. I can't buy one wholesale for that price.

Heizer makes a single shot pistol that shoots the round.
Some people just plain suck.

Then there’s the Kel-Tec RDB, that’s if you can actually find one and then it works.

Re: Alternatives to AR's for shooting 5.56
PSA has 5.56 AKs coming out this year with AR mag wells since the zastava m90 / m85 are no longer imported & becoming hard to find.
There is a seller on gunbroker with de-milled SAR80 kits, they are essentially the AR180 licensed to singapore, I forget his name but he is a well known importer on the AK forums.

The ARAK-21 upper will allow a folding stock on an AR lower. However, you might come in over budget or too close to your budget based on what you would need to obtain to fit your need/want.
