Suggestions on what to buy
I'm looking for suggestions on a potential rifle purchase. I'd like to have something mostly for plinking/non-competition target shooting but would like it to be a center-fire so I can reload ammo for it. Suitability for small critters would be a plus, but not necessary. I'm open to just about anything. Bolt action, lever action, even semi-auto.

I'm looking for a .357 lever action (Rossi ) to replace the one I gave my daughter- fun little plinker - barring that, probably the new Ruger 9mm takedown - cheap to shoot - easy to reload, and I believe ok for groundhogs with the new hunting rules.

Re: Suggestions on what to buy
Right now I've done 9mm and .45 ACP. I have the equipment to do .357/.38 as well, but haven't actually loaded any of that caliber yet. Looking for "value"...not cheap junk, but not overpriced either. The Ruger 9mm mentioned above by solrac7 lists for $649. That's probably close to my max.

Didn't read this before posting, pistol caliber is going to limit it. The Ruger is nice. For a budget, you could always do the Hi-point carbine or build a PC AR.
38/357 will limit you to lever guns mostly. I believe Ruger still makes the M77/357 bolt gun, but that's the only one that comes to mind.

Re: Suggestions on what to buy
Three rifles I own that I consider my “fun” guns that might fit the bill.
Henry Big Boy .357 lever action. Very accurate to 100 yards with good quality .357 loads, fun at shorter range with .38 special. Sufficient for varmints and deer.
Roger PC carbine. Fun and cheap to shoot, but not a hunting rifle.
Tikka t3 Stainless in .223 rem. No recoil, light, super accurate.Last edited by frankski; March 17th, 2018 at 02:47 PM.

This should be the year of the AR15.
Fight back! No matter what you want, it should end up being an AR15! LOL!
I'd do a 9mm AR15 as a pistol if I had to do it all over again, but I don't dislike my 9mm carbine - it's fun to shoot.
Never had anyone hand it back and say "That's stupid".
The Ruger PC9 could probably had for less money though.

Re: Suggestions on what to buy
While not what I would call a "traditional rifle" because of the plastic stock, the Ruger American rifle is high on the "get what you pay for" or value end of things. I bought a centerfire version for my daughter to hunt with in .243 Win and it shoots sub MOA groups with factory ammo easily at 100 yards. They can be had for under $400. I know they make a "varmint" version in the wildly popular 6.5 Creedmoor that comes as a package deal with a Vortex scope. I have only heard good things about them. They are hard to beat for the money. I am not justifying a rifle purchase at Cabelas but simply sharing the link.
