Re: On the Subject of AK's, What's Good, What's Not so Good?
As several have said before: Avoid IO and Century made AKs -- RAS (missing the T and H on the ends) and C39s. Century does a good job at converting AKs but sucks at making them.
N Paps are garbage as well and Rob Ski proved that a while ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j18op9M6QgM (Check out AKfiles and AK Operators Union as add'l sources on AKs.)
For the money a WASR is a good bet and if you can afford it Arsenal is hard to beat. I have a plum SLR-107FR and I would sell every other long gun (all my ARs, my garand, shotguns, etc) before I would ever part with that.

in addition to the $550 wasr and npap at the Oaks show, there was a table with $250 m70 front ends including the gas cut off / grenade sights

Re: On the Subject of AK's, What's Good, What's Not so Good?
This thread is right on time for me. I’m looking into an AK as my next purchase. I was torn between an AK or an AR pistol. Going with an AK. What is the 6920 equivalent? What is meant by that is generally speaking you can’t go wrong with a 6920 AR, some are better, some are worse but it’s a solid rifle that’s really never a bad choice. Which AK is like that?

If you're not hung up on having a bayonet lug or threaded muzzle, Romanian SAR rifles are also solid. Only available on the secondary market for around $600-$700.

I just found 8 WASR10s on Gunbroker starting at $550 or under. Unless you want to drop a grand, the WASR is a great buy. Do your due diligence.
