What is your personal preference and what do you recommend for general hunting "for anything North America?"

Inquiring minds would like to know....

Unless, of course, you're just looking to Hoover a data dump by forum members????

    308 will do it all.

Anything North America I'm going .300 WSM. It's got more oomph for something like a brown bear and more range necessary for some species.

I'd always advocate too much vs. too little when it comes to a single choice in caliber.

I own both, 300wsm gets vote for extended range. but if you were only going to own 1 rifle id go 300 win mag, it handles heavy projectiles better than the wsm ammo is also cheaper and easier to find.

    A rule breaker already. . . .

I'm just trying to settle a discussion between myself and a friend.

    I think a 300 WSM is much more versatile then a 308.

Both are good cartridges. I would give accuracy to the 308 and energy to the 300 WSM. I’m like Roy Weatherby, velocity, velocity, velocity.

I bought a 300 RSAUM this year, I got a smoking deal on a Remington model Seven and I absolutely love it . . Too bad ammo is non-existent and I have to build my own.

    there are no rules......

theoretically the wsm beats the 308, and thats why i bought one (for elk hunting in colorado) but if you factor in ammo availability, price, barrel life, rifle choices, etc 308 wins

Does overall cost and availability of ammo come into consideration? Is reloading an option? If so I'd probably pick the .308 for overall versatility.
Actually I'd have some other calibers in mind first but that's not the question.

Edit: USMC beat me to it.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.
