It seems that common sense is not teachable.
Gender confusion is a mental illness

To me that is the wrong mental state to have as it mentally allows yourself, hey everyone has one and hence it's ok when I have one.

There are some freaky things that can happen, mechanical failures, kabooms from ammunition, but this is just plain dumb ass stuff and I really don't feel bad for the guy. But thanks for posting to remind everyone not to be stupid.

We all know there have been cops who've done it.

The problem is we become too comfortable and bad things happen when the guard is down.
not knowing the individual, the above seems likely, though certainly no excuse. Possibly a little excitement over the new purchaser as well? also no excuse... glad your friend survived...
    Let's go Brandon!!!

I believe the basis of negligent discharges is attributed to "habit". Operating in the habit mode we tend to move quickly and without thinking, so it's just a matter of time before the law of averages. When handling my firearm, I make it a ceremony, b/c my firearm doesn't give a shit who it shoots. I'ts like workiing with electricity, it just lays there.........waiting like a Cobra. Then BLAM!! You shorted out.

No friend involved, just an observation.
I did see a ND on the range when an individual was trying to clear a jam. Thankfully the muzzle was pointed down range and at the ground.

The statement of everyone will have one is regurgitated here.
It was made to me by more than one top tier instructor.
It's not making an allowance for it to happen. Its just a statement that it will. It doesn't excuse the when.
I have not had one to date.
    Hopefully it never occurs.
I try my best to stay focused on what I'm doing anytime I have a gun.

Complacency is, in my opinion, one of the biggest factors.

2 other guys I know have had them. One directly in front of me while hunting. A group of 5 standing around discussing where we were going to hunt. He turned away from the crowd and ran a 30-30 round into the ground 6 feet from us.
A LEO I know was handling a new handgun and fired a round into his coffee table.
He seemed to be well trained..
Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

Yeah, no. I'm not buying the line that everyone is destined to have one.

Some shooters are clueless about safety, some are anal about safety, some know better but can't be bothered, and a whole bunch are somewhere in-between those three. Each one has a different probability of fucking up. Sure, someone in the anal group can have an ND, but it's as unlikely as a marathon runner having a heart attack.

And if your LEO friend wasn't well-trained, he might have done worse than shooting a table.
