    Default Negligent discharge

I put this in the general section.
A guy I know just had surgery on his arm due to having had a negligent discharge with a new Glock pistol.
I may never know exactly how it happened because he will probably be too embarrassed to give me the details.
I got this info from a 3rd party related to the guy and was asked that I not reveal where I found out.

    Ok.
    Here's what I was told.
The guy bought a new Glock pistol. It wss either a gen 4 or 5 and came with the multiple backstraps.
He was changing the backstraps WITHOUT UNLOADING THE GUN. Is that yelling?
This guy is one of us gun nuts ( what I am sometimes referred to), has probably been shooting longer than I have, has hunted longer than I have, likely has more guns than I have but has never found the need to get even the most basic of fundamental training, including safety training.

I'm not sure how severe or how much permanent loss of use of that arm/ hand he will.have.

Hopefully, nothing permanent but hurt pride.
If, by some twist, I get more info, I will post up.

There are 2 types of people who shoot.
Those who have a negligent disharge and those going to have one.

    I won't even entertain the word accidental.here.
    Negligent pure and simple.

Damn. What were those troublesome safety rules again?

Glock's fault! They should have designed it so you could not change backstraps while it was loaded , or at least in battery.

Maybe he could use this version:

Firearm Safety Rules Adapted for Children

Gun safety is serious, and not something to fool around with.
To be safe, follow these rules:

    1. Always treat guns as if they are loaded and
    can shoot.

    2. Never point the muzzle of a gun at anything
    you don’t want to destroy.

    3. Always keep your finger off a gun’s trigger
unless the gun is pointed at a safe target and you
    are ready to shoot it.

    4. Bullets are powerful, so remember: You must
know what your target is, and you must also
    know what’s behind it.

    5. Always check for an empty chamber before attempting to clean or do work your gun!
    (my addition)

So that's Glock arm right? Sounds like the same problem Glock has with Glock leg.

He didn't get past #1. What makes you think he would read #5? Ha. I just hope he recovers fully.

So he didn't feel the need to unload it? Thought it was unloaded? Or just never crossed his mind?

That will be a question I ask if any of this comes to light.
Like I said. I was asked to not let him know where I found out. It will be embarrassment and maybe trying to sweep it under the rug.
I'll see if any of it makes Facebook. That would open the door.
I don't do Facebook so I'll have my wife scan for any mention.

He did what he did, it is done, fortunately nobody else was injured and hopefully he will recover fully. It is wise to learn from others' mistakes.

    That's true.
I have already used the story as a teaching / awareness point.
I try to impress the need for safety awareness and handling fundamentals to all my friends or people I know.

To date, having spoken to dozens and dozens of people, I have had one person take a one day handgun class and another who wanted to learn basic skills to start shooting competition. The second guy ( doctor) apparently didn't get very much out of the 3 day class because the instructor wasn't focused on speed

I texted a dozen guys who have guns. None will end up take any type of class.

There's guys with training that have done it.
We all know there have been cops who've done it.

The problem is we become too comfortable and bad things happen when the guard is down.
