Red dot placement on a pistol with a rail...
I am going to put a red dot on the S&W Victory 22 I just got to see how i like it. It has a rail that goes from the back of the gun and extends about 5" forward ovee the chamber and the front part of the barrel. My question is moving it closer to the front of the gun would seem to make it point fast....inbthe middle prhaps would be better for making small adjustments and no benefit having it all the way reaward except maybe holster fit. Where is best? Will be primarily for shooting small targets....

Re: Red dot placement on a pistol with a rail...
I've used full sized red dot scopes for years in bullseye competition on both .22 LR and .45 ACP pistols and for time on a .45 ACP revolver for pins and plates. Never found an advantage with placement of the 'scope since they're not limited by eye relief. Though I suppose there might be variables with e "reflex" type red dots, but I've never used one. What I have found MOST important though, is to be sure to wear your prescription glasses when shooting with one! Esp. if your eyes are astigmatic! Fail to do so and instead of a red dot you'll see a red wooly caterpillar!

Placement depends on what you're going to do with the pistol. If just for fun, range, small varmits, etc. I'd go with the middle position because you're not necessarily looking a fast sight picture.
