Either way, a conviction will strip your rights.
And does the officer determine that, or even have the ability to make the determination?

I keep asking this question, and we keep going in circles.

If the LTCF had just expired, the officer might look at the exception and not arrest, but can one count on that, considering that we are talking about a firearm.

    As always, IANAL, and YMMV.

Wow, lots of replies. Thanks guys.

Ironically, today I checked the mail and a renewal form was sent to me. How great is that?

Not really Ironic. The sheriff is suppose to send out a reminder/renewal information three months prior to you license expiration. Nice to see your sheriff does it. Some still don't

I meant it was ironic that I posted a day ago and the letter came in the mail today without me knowing they did this. But I'm glad to hear they are supposed to do this automatically.

No. That's what DAs are for. They are the ones who actually file charges if and when an arrest is made. I'd imagine that if a particular officer kept running in folks who had LTCFs expired within the 6 month window, that the DAs office would tell them to knock that shit off, because they can't get convictions, because there was NO LAW BROKEN.

6 months of licensure costs $2. That's not worth possibly getting caught up by some officer who is ignorant to the 6 month post-expiry exception. I'd only use the 6 months in an emergency that prevents you from renewing (traveling for work, in the hopsital, deployed, etc)
Lets not forget if stopped in a reciprocal state while travelling.. will THEY except the expired permit per their laws? I think I would prefer to get mine before expiration, normally the month of expiration

    Now here is something interesting:

    http://www.sheriffalleghenycounty.com/firearms.html

    DENIAL CRITERIA

In addition to receiving a "DENIED" status by PICS, your application will NOT be accepted by the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office if you:
    1. Have an open case with ANY court (including traffic citations, parking tickets, fish and game, etc)
    2. Have a closed case with ANY court with a remaining case balance. This is to include payment arrangements made with any court. Fines and court costs MUST be paid in FULL before your application will be accepted.
    3. The ACSO will NOT accept applications for Non-PA Resident Licenses.
Now - leaving aside the legality of any of the above....wouldn't it suck if you waited until the last possible day to renew, and on the way there, you got pulled over by a cop and cited for some traffic violation?

Unrelated - but I also found this little gem:

Our next priority is to process the applications of those who wish to carry a firearm. In addition to having the authority to issue licenses, the Sheriff also has the authority to revoke a license for good cause. Examples include, but are not limited to:

    Fines (Traffic, Non-Traffic and/or Criminal)
    Pending Hearings
    Incompleted Probation/ARD
    Falsifying Information
    Repeat Offenders
So....as I read it - if you get a speeding ticket and pay a fine, he can revoke your LTCF. Now, maybe he is referring to UNPAID fines - but that's not what it says.

Also...repeat offenders, of what? If you get three parking tickets, is that what he is talking about??

    On topic:

Q: How long before my license expires can I renew it?
A: You can renew your license whenever you want to. However, you will lose whatever time is left on the current license.

Example: If you renew a year early, the new license will still only be good for five years. As long as you are okay with losing the time left, we’re okay with renewal.

It is especially useful in the case of couples who wish to get on the same “renewal schedule” or citizens who plan to be out of the area for an extended period of time and will be unable to renew on time.
