Default How strong is 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser m 96 Action.

How strong is the M 96 Swedish mauser in 6.5 x55 . I was interested in building off of that setup.

SAAMI has long stated 46,000 cup (copper crusher units of pressure) = 51,000 psi (lbF / sq in) for the Swedish Mauser. Stay at or below that pressure (it's the same, just different units of measure, like 32F = 0C) and your build should be fine. The CIP (Euro organization) says 55,000 psi. The Swedish govt converted some m96 rifles to 308 Win for target shooting, but that's high for actions that could have been built in the last decade of the 1800s, IMO.

Thanks for the information. I want to keep it 6.5x55 and make it a hunting rifle. Or find one already customized. I am just trying to build information on this rifle.

You would be better off starting with a Mauser 98. Better actions and they can take higher pressures.

DO NOT sporterize an original rifle! Those days are over and you will make the rifle a lot less valuable.

    .

Those days are over? If he wants to sporterize an original let him. Just because it's a disgrace to you doesn't mean it is to another.

    I sporterized a Ex-sniper M91/30 and haven't looked back or thought twice.

Its his rifle and of course he can do what he wants. But why would anyone want to turn a $400+ Swedish Mauser into a $100 rile (and spend money in the process). Instead the OP should sell it and buy a used bolt action or even a new Savage. They will work better in the field and should have some money left over to put into a scope.

And the new Savage (Ruger, etc) can handle higher pressures than the old Swede. The 6.5 X 55 is an excellent cartridge for PA hunters, it is good for deer, and can still be used for groundhogs, or coyotes with the right ammo. It does not kick bad, and is exceedingly accurate and has superior ballistics due to the sectional density of most of the available ammo. My wife has a 6.5 X 55 Winchester M70 from back when this was the caliber of the year some time back.

See the thread on this caliber in the reloading section here on poofa.

    Excellent advice and observation.

Even those $69 Mosins are now fetching $300.
Why throw away money cutting up a valuable rifle when there are other options out there?
Those that advocate chopping up rifles I have to wonder if they would go buy a new car and cut the roof off because they wanted a pickup truck...

Are you asking about the cartridge itself?
    Some people just plain suck.
If you're gonna be dumb ya gotta be tough.
