"Those days are over" is true, from the aspect that there is no longer thousands of $20 rifles in barrels in the aisles of Woolworth 5 and 10s and the like, nor obtainable by mail-order in the USA that once was and but for illegal laws would still be. $20 rifles dried them up to the point they are far fewer and commanding hundreds of dollars in the gun shows. Learn from history. $20 rifles, in poor condition, are now hundreds. Today's $119-$199 rifles in another generation or two will command much more. Of course, ignoring all that to make one one's own by customizing it is just another viewpoint, and a valid one.

There were a few companies building sporters using Swedish Mauser actions.

    Excellent advice and observation.

Even those $69 Mosins are now fetching $300.
Why throw away money cutting up a valuable rifle when there are other options out there?
Those that advocate chopping up rifles I have to wonder if they would go buy a new car and cut the roof off because they wanted a pickup truck...

I remember the lower price rifles in Woolworths. I miss those days. I might look into Savage, Ruger,or a Kimber rifle on the used rack somewhere. I think the 6.5 caliber nice work with.

Great caliber. That long 6.5mm bullet might not be big on paper numbers , but it is big on killing power. Those Scandinavian hunters are true riflemen and use this round to great effect and take lots of elk and caribou at long range in the high mountains.
