    "Houston we have a problem"

So if it is shorter as the OP described, then maybe its actually the 98AZ short rifle. Big difference that a simple picture would solve.
    Or sporterized.

Originally built as a Gew.98 at The Danzig Arsenal in 1917 during WWI. Actions from WWI were often recycled and rebuilt into 98k's for WWII. Many were brought home or imported into the US. Often stocks were cut down and barrels shortened into hunting rifles.

Bolts are often replaced. When rifles were captured or surrendered , the bolts were often removed and tossed onto a separate pile.

THANX much for your patience,,, here are some pics of the piece in question.
Overall length is 41.75" and barrel length measures @ 22". The 'BUTT' end of stock is extremely FAT/wide. Barely fits in a standard base slot in gun safe (even wider than an M1 Garand). Stock is rough and shows plenty of wear. #'s on receiver and barrel do match but not a matching # on the bolt. Only 2 digits on the safety and do not correlate with serial number in any way. No # shows on trigger group/guard.
If pics did not upload properly, please provide an email address to attach photos. This 'thread' site does not show that it was a successful upload.

Here are some original Mausers. The top is a typical Gew.98 'long' rifle with 29in barrel.
The bottom is Yugo 98k 'short' rifle

    Middle is a M96 Swedish.

Still haven't seen what this rifle looks like. Crickets for several days now. Might or might not be anything like several examples shown. Guess the OP got his answer...

I attempted to post 5 photos and had no response. Guessing they didn't get through. Would make out better attaching photos and data to an email if anybody would supply one. This forum site/format is poor (at best) in it's navigation to 'post'. Yet I and other's feel there is a wealth of experience and knowledge in the group to tap. If unable to supply a contact, I understand and THANK YOU for your willingness to assist.

I suggested using postimage to post your pictures, there’s really no easier way imo.
Upload them to postimage and then simply click the link and paste it here.

Not to sound rude but getting people to give your their email being you are a new member isn’t going to be that easy imo.

    Try the postimage method.
