    It looks to me that it's cracked a long time. Look in the crack. Fresh crack is brite crystal form structure, old is dark, rusty even oil soaked.

    All excellent suggestions. There's no sentimental value in it, but otherwise the pistol functions. what are the chances of finding a colt frame to put it in?

    Numrich would be your best bet but I don't currently see any frames listed, they also buy parts guns to strip down and sell off as parts. Your other option is to randomly search gun broker.

    That type of crack is from screwing in too tight of a barrel to frame fit. I've seen it in aluminum frame smith and wessons. The cobra is an aluminum framed detective specail isn't it?

    Yep it is fairly common. Even if the frame is not cracked you can tell if the barrel has "thread choke" when you clean the barrel or slug the bore.
