Springfield Armory 1911 barrel cracked
Evening all,
Anyone ever see a 1911 barrel crack like in the attached photo? I am holding the barrel upside down, so the crack is at the point below where the barrel link is attached.
Was out shooting this morning and had two malfunctions where the slide would not return to battery. Felt like something wasn't right and called it a day. I thought maybe I had a worn out spring or something, but discovered the crack in the barrel after disassembly and cleaning.
I am the original owner and the gun is about 9 years old, with a few thousand rounds through it.
Just emailed Springfield warranty service.
Any thoughts or insight is appreciated.

Good catch. I have a Range Officer with about 1,000 rounds through it and will be watching how they treat you. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I'd say ya need a fresh 18 or 18.5# recoil spring too.

Re: Springfield Armory 1911 barrel cracked
Thank you both for the replies. I will keep the thread updated when I hear back from Springfield.
Abner, why do suggest the 18 or 18.5 lbs spring? I have always used a 16 lbs spring, as I thought that was standard.

Re: Springfield Armory 1911 barrel cracked
Been my experience they work with 230gr standard ball as well as occasional +P ammo , and prevent the guns from battering themselves and breaking parts. Springs should be changed around every 2000-2500rds.

Barrel extension has odd wear, like it's rubbing extractor.

1911’s need new springs occasionally.
When I was shooting local matches I carried springs and changed out the recoil spring every couple thousand rounds at the most, sometimes sooner, cheap insurance.

My experience with SA has been positive. According to the SA website your gun is under warranty. One question: were you shooting reloads? If so, were they within specs (e.g. not pushing the limits)?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
Recoil spring has been changed but not as often as it probably should have been.
Never used anything but factory loaded ammunition.
