Does anybody anodize aluminum cased ammo?
I was thinking how cool it would be to have anodized aluminum cased ammo. I doubt anybody will ever do this because it would raise cost on a product that is already meant to be cheaper than brass.
But for display purposes, it would be pretty cool to have some funky looking ammo.
I also don't know how the anodizing process would affect the cases. I just want fun looking ammo that functions normally.

I believe aluminum cases are all anodized. They are greyish and I never saw one that looked like polished aluminum.
But it is a good idea. After the electrolysis all they have to do is add a dye and you could get a colored case. I am surprised no one is marketing them.

CCI/Speer Blazer aluminum cases are anodized and have an additional coating of some sort applied after anodizing. The additional processing costs of aluminum cases has resulted in brass-cased ammo cheaper than Blazer aluminum.

Aluminum blazer sure doesn't look anodized to me and I have gotten my fair share of parts anodized.(an removed enough of it) I have used abrasive cloth to check to see if they are anodized, there is no oxide layer like you see on anodized parts one you remove a few thousandths from the surface. Besides you run the risk of scratching/wearing dies quicker if you anodize them as well affecting malleability. They look to me like they tumble them after the case is formed and then temper them. Probably run them through a cleaning operation after tempering and the load them up.
Regular brass can be powder coated and then run through the sizing die. I have seen several guys do it over the years. Just don't powder coat the inside. A fairly popular thing these days is black nickel brass, basically the same as regular nickel but blackish in color.Last edited by dkf; November 23rd, 2017 at 06:50 PM.
