Default Can somebody tell me a little more about 223 Wylde?

I read the wiki entry on it. Is it supposed to be more accurate? Only with heavier loads?

Really wasn't that much information on it.

Anybody have any experience with it?

Only that it is supposed to be a compromise answer to using both 5.56 and .223 Rem in the same rifle, having to do with leade and/or throat depth.

The Wylde is a slightly different chamber than .223 Rem or 5.56. It's not really a compromise in any area from my experience. It has better accuracy and can actually have a wider chamber at the base of the cartridge than 5.56. You can see the dimension differences in the tech section over at www.ar15barrels.com

    On a (barely) related subject:

Is it WILL-dee or WILD? I've heard both.

In general it's a 223 chamber with a longer throat or a smaller/tighter NATO chamber how ever you wanna look at it .But in a nutshell that's what it is just another variation on how the throat is cut on it

The Wylde throat diameter is .0025 to .003 smaller than the 5.56 throat diameter and the throat length is longer

As aside note my Savage .223 has a longer throat than my AR15 rifles. Todays .223 rifles with a 1 in 9 or slower twist rates have longer throats. Meaning there is plenty of room in the chamber for the .223 cartridge with room left over to fit the company lawyer. And normally the "older" .223 rifles with a 1 in 14 or 1 in 12 twist and the shorter throats that cause pressure spikes with M885 military ammo.

This also means that if you do have a real Colt SP-1, it's best to use .223 55gr ammo in it. The 1-12 barrels don't like bullets over 55gr.. If reloading your own, use .223 dies for the SP-1, not 5.56mm dies. Can you shoot 5.56mm out of an SP-1? Sure, it's your rifle. Do what you want, but why would you? If you really want a SP-1 to shoot heavy bullets, or surplus NATO ammo, then just build a retro AR-15 with the faster twist barrel and more tolerant chamber.

Oh yeah, get the "small base" reloading dies in .223 for that SP-1. You want to fully resize the head on those cases or you will have case head issues after several reuses of the brass.

The 5.56 designation is the European metric equivalent to a .223 and are one in the same resizing dies.

And the difference between older .223 rifles and the M16/AR15 rifles is throat length. And in 1989 the SAAMI interchangeability warning came out with the adoption of the M885 round loaded to higher pressure. And it was the older M16 rifles that had 1in14 and then 1in12 "faster" twist rates, the newer M16 rifles have a "slower" twist rate of 1in7 to shoot the M885 cartridge that is loaded to 58,700 psi vs the M193 ammo that is loaded to 55,000 psi.

But the throat in my Savage bolt action 223 with a 1in9 twist is longer than my two AR15 rifles. Most new rifles .223 rifles have chambers big enough for the .223/5.56 cartridge with additional room for the company lawyer.
