I went to REI to look at, purchase the ResQLink.
Unfortunately, the store did not have one nor did any local REI stores. The shipping would have been too late before heading to camp ( my bad).
I bought SPOT gen3 on sale for about $80 & was told there was a $100 fee to activate it.
Getting online, the fee was actually a $200/ yr cost.
It has some nice features but essentially, I didn't want or need them.
I want the ability, that if needed, someone could locate me if I was incapacitated in the woods.

I did a search and found one on Amazon for a bit more but ordered it. Should come tomorrow.
I'll look it over, make a decision on which to keep and return the one I decide isn't what I want.

My buddy, a youngster at 64 joked he would just let the animals and bugs eat him..

    We'll see when it arrives.
I'm pretty healthy but mobility, strength, endurance etc etc etc is declining with age.

Perhaps I'm just being overly concerned.
Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

This point of view has always perplexed me. If there exists something that could help save your life why not try it. I have taught my children that new technology can be amazing and does not need to be avoided. I also teach them that there are many was to skin a cat and they should know them all. Option are a great thing to have.

If REI told you it cost $100 to activate, I would ask them if there is a special code or something that gets you there. Otherwise that is misleading sales practice, and I would raise a bit of hrll with the store.

I did call them to see if they had a promo code for that activation.
The person I talked to said the activation was never part of the sales agreement and whoever told me that $100 number probably knew there were additional charges but didn't know what they actually were.
I will see if I can find that salesperson when ii return the unit. His code number was not on the receipt. The cashiers was.

You may want to pack a fire extinguisher too.

Good point. I can easily put it under the kitchen sink I generally carry in.
I pack heavy and will blame the boy scouts forever.

Thank you for this thread and info.

I am 73, bad back, bad feet, and in some ways I am a man who has no business hunting at all, let alone, hunting alone.
I love my wife and listen as much as old ears and a hard head will permit. Because I habitually hunt alone, my hunting activities cause her a level of concern.
But... I hated the thought of giving up on spring turkey hunting because I am old. This device will probably stretch my hunting life a few more years.
I sincerely thank you for this information, I had previously never heard of this gadget.
I just now went to the website and ordered this gadget.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

    SgtRick417,
Just reading your post makes me happy to have asked about this information.

I'm a few years younger than yourself and have a few issues after 40 years in construction but feel having a device like this could be helpful in the event something could occur.
The area I and my friend hunts isn't and exceptionally large are but i would imagine trying to find one of us would take hours if not longer.
It's cool to hear you are still getting out into.the woods.
I hope to for as long as im able.
    Good luck to you.

Maybe take a new hunter with you so you are not alone. That would also help keep hunting alive. So many new hunters give up because it can be difficult learning how to do it when you haven't had any guidance as a youth.
