Is it essentially a dead caliber?

Used by several Federal agencies, including Federal Air Marshals and Secret Service, so it's definitely not dead.

I still use my P229 .357 Sig and you'll find the price of ammo has come down in cost now that federal isn't the only ammo company loading the .357 Sig.

I don't think it's any more dead than the 10mm, 45 Long Colt, 41 Mag, 32 H&R Mag, or the 38 Super to name few.

It's still in use by my local township also.

    357 SIG is my EDC. It's a 3rd gen G23 with a conversion barrel. The G23 is a .40.
.40 mags handle 357 SIG handily. On the range, the G23 becomes a 9mm.
357 SIG is so powerful, my gun club won't allow it to be used on the automatic resetting pistol targets.

Good response... I guess it depends on what someone thinks a "dead" cartridge is. Just because you can't always walk into a Walmart and pick up a box does not mean it is "dead".

Just look at the 45 LC. 144 years old and still one of the most popular big bore cartridges out there. But like the rest you will have to reload them I doubt they sell much factory stuff.

a lot of leo s used to carry the 357 sig but the great ammo shortage changed that .
remember those .410 pistols also fire 45 lc and cowboy action shooting .

The biggest potential problem with the 357 Sig is that although the cartridge is basically a necked down .40 you can not make the Sig cases from a 40! They come out a bit short. If you could it would be a round that would never die.

So get yourself a few thousand rounds of brass (while it is readily available) and a reloading die. Then the round will not be obsolete in your lifetime.

The one PGCO I talked to told me he used Hornady 147gr XTP ammo and this is the fella that said he's put all kinds of animals down with it. I think he told me the velocity is around 1200 fps.
