Re: I NEED a 10 inch AR upper in 555/223
I also prefer the 1:9 because I mostly plink with 55gr but for SHTF ammo, I have 62gr. M855.
I think with most companies that sell the 10-11" barrels a lot of the barrels are government contract (PSA uses FN barrels) and military spec is 1:7 twist.
But I really dont notice much of a difference between my 1:9 and 1:7 barrels."One must be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves” ~ Machiavelli

Re: I NEED a 10 inch AR upper in 555/223
A few more thoughts. For a short barrel AR pistol meant for close range (velocity doesn't mean anything to you), maybe 5.56/.223 isn't the caliber to choose. I suppose there's a 'cool' factor about a really short 5.56/.223 barrel, but you don't get full powder burn, and the noise and flash are significant. Plus, even with HP ammo, you are likely to have little expansion and over penetration at close range. But if you already have ammo, lowers, mags, etc., that might be a reason to go that route. As mentioned, everyone has their intended use and opinions. But I'd consider 9mm as an option. And subsonic 9mm can be suppressed very well. Not so with 5.56/.223.
IMHO, 300 BO is for suppressed shooting and really no reason to go that route otherwise due to cost. (But SG Ammo frequently has S&B for .50/round.)Last edited by esh21167; November 3rd, 2017 at 06:05 AM.

Re: I NEED a 10 inch AR upper in 555/223
I like 300 BLK, but I reload it and as mentioned even with reloading it is at least twice my cost to reload as 223 and that's with converting 223 brass. 150fmj just cost more than 55fmj that's easy math.
I've also come to lose confidence in the terminal ballistics of sub-sonic loads. Most of the gel tests I've seen seem to suggest that you have to really invest in costly bullets like Lehigh Defense if you want good expansion from a subsonic.
I'm only guessing but I'll bet that I have less than 200 rounds of 300 blk at my disposal."It seems that the Constitution is more or less guidelines than actual rules"

Re: I NEED a 10 inch AR upper in 555/223
I considered going 9MM (I have 5.56 now on a AR pistol with 7" barrel), but the AR pistol looks so darn ugly with the 9MM mags having off of it!
I like my 7" AR in 5.56. It runs great and ammo is cheap enough (I reload).
9MM AR is attractive to me only because ammo is cheaper and I could shoot it on the indoor range and on the clubs (pistol) steel!
9MM uppers aren't cheap and they are difficult to find in the 7-8" versions lately.
For what I use mine for, I'll just stick with 5.56.Toujours prêt

Re: I NEED a 10 inch AR upper in 555/223
I have a 16" DPMS Oracle I bought right before the election just in case I didn't get my 80% build done "in time". I haven't gotten around to getting the right irons for it yet, so I haven't shot it yet.
Since I now have a 5.56/.223, and I don't want to risk the wrong caliber in the wrong AR, I built my 80% into a 7" pistol in 223 Wylde instead of considering other calibers. It's never going to be a 200-yard shooter. Hell, it'll probably never see 100 yards, but it's mine and I built it from scratch - that counts for something.

Valid points on the 9mm AR. If I built one, I'd use a 9mm lower, not one with a wonky looking adapter with that skinny mag in the large mag well. There are other options for 9mm 'pistols' than the AR as well. Different strokes, and that's fine. You know what they way about variety.
