Default .454 casull and 45lc pistol round for hunting

Any recommendations for .454 casull and 45lc pistol round for hunting?

I have a Blackhawk 45LC with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. I cast the Lee 300 grain flat nose bullet (Gas checked)and use a max load of H110. I can get it a little over 1300fps with no pressure signs (primers are pretty flat but you can extract a fired case with your fingernail) With the extremely large metplat it hits like a sledgehammer.

This is about all I can handle with a Blackhawk. If you go to a .454 Casull I would recommend a heavier pistol.

For deer hunting I prefer a "hot" loaded 45LC with a hornady xtp hollowpoint. I shoot a super redhawk .454. If you don't load your own I would suggest buffalo bore ammo.

A decent 250gr and heavier wide flat nosed or swc in the 900-1000fps is about all you need really need ,put a hole through the lungs and they don't go far. And that same load will plow through any bones it encounters.

    Thanks.

It is a ruger super redhawk with a 7.5 incl barrel. I had a Leopold 2x scope put on it.

I don't reload. I will look at buffalo bore for the .454.

From what I have read the long colt is questionable for deer, others say it is ok.

Have any of you tried the lever evolution .45lc out of a pistol?

Deer haven't gotten immune to bullets... .45LC will kill them just as dead as anything else.

Like any cartridge, there is an ideal operating range. More power means you extend that range further.

The .45LC can be loaded up to .44mag levels. A .44mag is good deer cartridge, you really don't have to step up to .454 for deer. Grizzly Cartridge offers two 265gr WFN loads you may want to consider, one listed at 950fps and one at 1400fps. You have to be careful with some JHPs, they could end up turning to shrapnel and ruining a bunch of meat. Grizzly also offers .454 ammo.

I would say that buffalo bore .45LC, Grizzly, or something similar with a +P would be good. The leverevolution would probably be ok. I would just stay away from cowboy or target type loads in the 45 LC. No need to go with full .454 IMO.

The issue is that many 45LC loads are meant for use in old style revolvers and replicas that are not designed for higher pressure loads. Since you have a .454 the pressure will not be a problem. Certainly many deer have been killed by a standard 45LC but I would consider it a marginal cartridge, the +P loads should give you better results.

Don't get me wrong the .454 will crush em...but it's maybe a little overkill at close ranges and comes with a big increase in recoil and muzzle blast. For me, a +P hot loaded 45LC is just right.

Too bad you don't reload....because you can reload .454 brass to mid-range 45 LC pressures and have a great hunting round without the hefty recoil of a .454...

I would think with a .454 Casull you would HAVE to reload. Its not that fun spending $2 every time you pull the trigger. And the loads I saw didn't even use expensive specialized bullets. Its still about the same price for hard cast. Same goes for the .45 Colt.

I would get a basic Lee reloading setup. They are not the best but they work. And after 200 rounds it is paid for.
